What an Oklahoma year does to your things

These are NOAA’s averages for Lawton, and they explain why the same box can be fine in April and a problem in August.

A range bar for each month. January runs from an average low of 27 to an average high of 54 degrees Fahrenheit. July runs from an average low of 72 to an average high of 97. Summer is the hard part. July and August average highs of 97°F and 96°F, and lows that only drop to about 71°F, mean a building in the sun gets little relief overnight. A metal drive-up building in direct sun can run hotter than the air outside.

Winter swings the other way. Lawton averages about 79 nights a year at or below freezing, most of them from November through March, and daily highs in January average only about 54°F.

Spring brings moisture. May and June are the wettest months, averaging roughly 3.7 to 4.0 inches of rain, and Oklahoma’s spring thunderstorms move fast, so temperature and humidity can change a lot in a day.

What needs it

Which of your things really need climate control

Not everything does, and paying for it when you do not is a waste. Here is the honest split.

What you are storingWhat heat, cold and moisture doClimate control
Wood furniture and antiquesExpands and contracts with heat and moisture. Joints loosen, veneer lifts, finishes crack.Worth it
Electronics and mediaHeat shortens their life, and swings in temperature can cause condensation inside.Worth it
Photos, documents and recordsPaper picks up moisture, curls, sticks together and can grow mildew. Heat yellows and fades it.Worth it
Leather and upholsteryLeather dries and cracks in heat, and both can pick up musty odors in humid weather.Worth it
Musical instruments and vinyl recordsWood and glue joints move, and heat can warp records.Worth it
Mattresses and beddingAbsorb moisture and odors over a long summer. Use a breathable cover.Helpful
Clothing, books and linensFine for a while in sealed bins. Books and fabric can mildew over a humid stretch.Helpful
Candles, cosmetics and medicationsHeat can melt or degrade them.Helpful
Appliances and metal furnitureUsually fine in a drive-up unit, especially if they are clean and dry.Not needed
Tools, lawn gear and holiday decor in plastic binsBuilt for the weather. A drive-up unit does the job for less. Not needed

Not sure? Ask whether you would be upset if it warped, cracked, molded or stopped working. If yes, climate-control it. Our buying guide and drive-up vs. climate-controlled guide go deeper.

What it means here

What our climate-controlled units are, and are not

Straight answers, because “climate-controlled” can mean different things at different facilities.

What they are

Indoor and temperature-controlled

Units at Cache Road open onto an indoor hallway, out of the sun and buffered from Oklahoma’s summer heat and winter cold.

What we do not claim

Humidity control

We do not say these units control humidity. In a wet spring, sealed bins and desiccant packs still help, as they would anywhere in Oklahoma.

What they do not do

Replace good packing

Climate control does not stop pests or fix a badly packed box. Wrap wood in breathable blankets, keep things off the floor, and leave a little air around them.

Packing

Pack for an Oklahoma summer, even in climate control

A few habits that protect your things anywhere.

Wood: breathable, not plastic

Wrap wood furniture in blankets or paper pads. Plastic can trap moisture against the finish.

Paper: sealed and off the floor

Photos and documents go in sealed bins or archival boxes, on a shelf or pallet, with a desiccant pack.

Electronics: original boxes

Use the original packaging if you have it, and let a cold device come to room temperature before you turn it on.

Leather: clean and covered

Clean it, let it dry, and cover it with a breathable sheet. Skip plastic wrap.

Look in every month or two

A quick visit catches a small problem before it becomes a big one.

Leave air around things

Do not pack wall to wall. A little space lets air move.

Climate control questions

Straight answers about climate-controlled storage in Lawton

Where are the climate-controlled units in Lawton?
Our climate-controlled units are at the Cache Road location, 6113 NW Cache Rd in northwest Lawton. The 37th Street location has drive-up units and outdoor vehicle parking, but no climate control.
Is climate-controlled storage worth it in Lawton?
For the right things, yes. Lawton’s average July high is about 97°F and its average January low is about 27°F, and the city sees roughly 79 nights a year at or below freezing. Wood furniture, electronics, photos, documents, records, instruments and leather do not do well with that swing. Tools, lawn gear and durable plastic bins usually do fine in a drive-up unit for less.
What does climate-controlled mean at Cache Road?
Our climate-controlled units are indoors, on a hallway, and temperature-controlled. We do not claim to control humidity, so pack sensitive things as you would anywhere in Oklahoma: sealed bins, breathable wraps on wood, and desiccant packs for paper.
How much more does climate-controlled cost?
Climate-controlled units cost more than drive-up units of the same size. Rates move with demand, so the live table on this page and the pricing page show today’s price for every size.
What sizes are available?
The table on this page lists today’s climate-controlled sizes at Cache Road with live availability. Sizes have run from a 5×5 (about a closet’s worth) up to a 10×20 (three to four bedrooms).
Can I store a mattress or upholstered furniture in a drive-up unit?
You can, but a mattress or a couch is the kind of thing that picks up heat, moisture and odors over a Lawton summer. If it is a good piece or you will store it for months, a climate-controlled unit is the safer choice. Use a breathable cover, not plastic.
Do I need climate control for a short stay?
Not always. A few weeks in spring or fall is easy on your things. Summer and deep winter are when it matters, and the longer the stay, the more it matters.
Are the units inside a building?
Yes. Climate-controlled units open onto an indoor hallway at Cache Road. Drive-up units at both locations open to the outside so you can pull up to the door.
Is there a lock, and is protection required?
A free premium security lock comes with your unit and you keep it when you leave. Protection is required on every rental. Bring your own policy, or ours starts at $9.00 a month.
What are the gate hours?
The gate is open 8am to 8pm every day with your own personal gate code. Access outside those hours is by approval only. Call (580) 265-5708 if you need it.
