Summer Storage for College Students
Going home for the summer? Three months of paying rent on an empty apartment is the most expensive way to handle the break. A small climate-controlled unit costs a fraction of that — and your stuff stays safer than if you left it in an unoccupied apartment.
The end-of-semester move-out hits Cameron and other Lawton students every May. Three months at home in another city. The apartment lease ends and the new one starts in August. Or you're keeping the apartment but heading home and don't want to leave a furnished place empty for a quarter of the year. A 5×5 or 5×10 unit handles either situation cleanly.
The summer storage math
Here's the honest comparison for a typical Cameron student:
- Pay rent on the empty apartment: three months of full rent on a place you're not using
- Trash everything and re-buy in August: hundreds in furniture and dorm stuff, plus the hassle of shopping again
- Storage: three months on a small unit, way less than either option above
For most students, storage is the cheapest of the three by a wide margin. Plus you keep your stuff, which means August move-in is a question of finding the new place and loading up — not buying everything again.
What students store for the summer
- Mattress, box spring, and bed frame (disassembled)
- Mini fridge and microwave
- TV and gaming setup
- Desk, chair, and small dresser or shelving
- Boxes of clothes (everything not coming home for summer)
- Kitchen stuff — dishes, pots, basic appliances
- Books and textbooks
- Decorative items, rugs, lamps
Why climate-controlled matters specifically for summer
Oklahoma summers are the worst storage conditions of the year. Heat and humidity peak just when most student storage is happening. A few specific risks:
- Mattresses absorb humidity and grow mildew. Three months of Lawton summer is enough to do real damage. Climate-controlled prevents it entirely.
- Electronics — TVs, monitors, gaming consoles — can suffer from heat and humidity over months
- Books warp, swell, and get musty in non-climate storage
- Anything fabric picks up smells from humidity that don't come out
The cost difference between climate-controlled and drive-up is small. The cost of a ruined mattress and TV is large.
How to pack for summer storage
Disassemble the bed frame
Take the bed apart. Bag and tape the hardware to the headboard or to the frame itself. Bed frame parts stack flat and save a ton of space.
Wrap the mattress in a breathable cover
A mattress storage bag (the breathable kind, not the cheap plastic bags) keeps dust off without trapping moisture. Cotton sheets work as a backup. Skip the vinyl bags from the moving store.
Boxes labeled by room
When you come back in August, "Kitchen," "Bathroom," "Closet" labels make unpacking ten times faster. Take a picture of the inside of each box for the things you'll need first.
Defrost and dry the mini fridge
Empty it, unplug it, let the freezer defrost, then wipe it dry. Prop the door open an inch with a towel during storage so it doesn't grow mold inside. This is the most common student mistake — and it's a smelly one.
Logistics for out-of-town students
If your parents are picking you up and you don't have help moving stuff to storage:
- Add a parent or local friend as an authorized user so they can move your stuff in or out without you
- Set up autopay from your account so you don't have to think about payments while you're home
- Reserve the unit before move-out day so the keys are ready when you arrive with a truck
- Take photos of everything as it goes in so you remember what's there in August
5×10 climate-controlled at Cache Road
The right size for a student's apartment or dorm setup over the summer. Holds a mattress, mini fridge, microwave, small furniture, TV, and several boxes of clothes and kitchen stuff. For just a dorm's worth, a 5×5 is enough. Climate-controlled is the right call for the three-month summer window — your mattress will thank you.

Reserve at lawtonustore.comCommon questions
When should I reserve for summer storage?
Two to four weeks before move-out, no later. May is the busiest month for student storage in Lawton, and the small units go fast. Reserve early to lock in the size you want.
How long is the lease for summer storage?
Month-to-month from day one. You rent for as many months as you need (usually three, May through August), then give notice and close out when you're back in town.
Is climate-controlled really needed for a mattress sitting in summer storage?
Yes. Mattresses are the most humidity-sensitive thing most students store. Oklahoma summers in a non-climate unit can mildew a mattress in weeks, and that smell never fully comes out. Climate-controlled at Cache Road is worth it.
Can my parents help me move in if I can't be there?
Yes. Add them as authorized users on your account. They get their own gate code and can move your stuff in or out without you being there.
